Illustrator Text Effects

When you want to give your text a special look, there are many ways to do it, from adding a 3D effect to creating a bold, eye-catching graphic style. But you can also achieve a unique and sophisticated effect with a simple path-based ribbon text which adds depth and flow to your text and can be used on various projects, from posters and invitations to logos, social media graphics, and more. Step 1

Open Illustrator and make a new file at any size you want. I will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px.

Step 2

Using the Pen Tool (P) or Pencil Tool (N) draw the path you want to use for your text.

Step 3

Select the Type Tool (T), position the cursor over the path and click on it.

Step 4

Using any font, size and color you wish, type your text.

Step 5

Go to Type > Type on a Path > Type on a Path Options.

Step 6

Lastly, on the Type on a Path Options window, apply the following settings and click OK.

Now that you know how to create a simple path-based ribbon text in Illustrator, you can easily modify the path, adjust the text size, change the color, or experiment with different fonts—just as you would with any text in Illustrator like in the following examples.
